The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has announced plans to expand support for investigative journalism and independent newsrooms across West Africa as media organisations grapple with shrinking funding and increasing operational challenges.
Executive Director Babatunde Akintunde announced at the inaugural CJID Ghana Media Summit in Accra, where media leaders, civil society organisations, policymakers and development partners gathered to discuss the future of journalism in the region.
According to him, the organisation is implementing programmes to strengthen media sustainability in Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
“We are working with journalists and supporting newsrooms, especially smaller ones, so they can respond to the challenge of shrinking funding and continue producing important investigative work that will improve the media ecosystem,” he said.
Mr Akintunde explained that the initiative seeks to help independent media organisations remain viable while continuing to produce public interest journalism despite declining donor funding and growing financial pressures.
He said the organisation would continue investing in investigative reporting as part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic accountability across West Africa.
The announcement formed part of activities marking the inaugural CJID Ghana Media Summit, which also commemorates seven years of Dubawa Ghana’s work in promoting fact-checking and information integrity.
