Inés Miranda Navarro at centre of an alleged public funds embezzlement case

An alleged corruption scandal has engulfed Inés Miranda Navarro, former head of territorial policy and landscape at the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, known for her support for the Polisario Front.

Implicated in the controversial management of public contracts for organising the “Landscape Days” between 2016 and 2019, this political figure faces serious accusations of abuse of public office, embezzlement of public funds, and fraud against the Spanish administration.

According to the reported details of the judicial case, Inés Miranda Navarro could face up to five years in prison and a ten-year ban from holding public office.

The suspicions concern an alleged system of irregular contract awards, contract splitting, and financial transfers to private companies under circumstances that could violate the rules governing the management of public funds.

At the centre of the investigations is Imaco 89, a company managed by María Ángeles Horna Andrade, wife of the Cabildo’s former public auditor, who oversaw expenditures and approved payments.

This family connection raises serious questions about potential conflicts of interest in managing public contracts.

This case takes on particular political significance because of Inés Miranda Navarro’s activist ties to circles supporting the Polisario Front.

Described as a staunch supporter of the Sahrawi separatist cause, she has distinguished herself by participating in initiatives supporting the Polisario Front, joining organisations of legal professionals mobilised around the issue of “Western Sahara”, and defending separatist Aminatou Haidar.
